You need to convert it to geometry and remove the Hair flag from the Effects list. Hope that helps.

Adrian is right, but still I have some memory problems or something similar because if I try to use hair as grass on a hill and transform it to geometry, sometimes even MAX crashes or if this doesn't happen MXST can't render. ( I am going to make some more tests because hair as grass is totally realistic.

1. Convert to geometry (from inside the Hair and Fur modifier)
2. Turn of the Hair and Fur modifier
3. Turn of Hair and Fur render effect
4. Apply a Maxwell material to the hair mesh object
5. Render :-)

I had same problem with max 7.5, but I used same procedure write by Xlars, and you can see result in Topic "Problem with rendering".
