Blender 3D (2.37a) 9mins 25secs @16 samples with Ambient occlusion sample 16 distance 1. (P4 2.8GHz 504Mb ram.)

Bezier curve with 0.001 thickness converted to a mesh & then sub-surfed 2 iterations, raytraced 90% transparent material for hair, BG diffuse white, 1 hemi light for specular & fill.

Hair thickness is probably a tad large and the BG is stepped rather than a smooth tranistion, but for 10 mins work not a bad result.

Great result Tim, I like Blender... it's a great piece of code. :D
But as you've said, the thickness is not convincing and Maxwell shadows are priceless.
