Perhaps you would rather consider enjoying RC until the next version. This is beta software, and is missing features accordingly. Since it is still in development, I might recommend making suggestions and being encouraging. But of course that's what I'd suggest...

Well damned if NL don't actually have a real piece of working beta software now. Miracles never cease, huh?
Now I still can't help feeling that while Maxwell does take two steps forward in image quality, it takes us several steps backwards compared to where the rest of rendering technology is today.

That said I will cut NL a bit of slack here with RC5, it is a good release. And the new sunlight selection system and the previewing are very nice features (and ahead of the curve, props to NL of these)

It does still have a long ways to go before I'd consider it a truly production usable renderer (do to the obvious lack of opacity/clip mapping, displacements, more advance g-buffers, true to life light transmission, etc.) But I will at least have to play with it a while longer before I give my full opinion.

Anyhow, here is a quick test I did here tonight, at least we're back to pre-RC functionality...

Oh Mike I know.. This RC has so many features... when the major bugs are solved it would be a big value for the money. It is looking like a professional software now. My congratulations to the NL programming team..

I only think that it became so relaxed that if we haven't complained that much I doubt that we would have this beta software released today.

We all like M~R very much. And we also love to hate it ;o
We all want to say how great NL is. It is all in their hands to make us make them grow.

Again, clipmaps/opacitymaps (real ones, not the shaddowless work around) , displacementmaps (maybe normal maps too?), speed optimization, sun+dia, and less noise...

Nice image... The colors are so natural... it is quite striking.

The windows.. still look funny.. and there is something strang with the shinny part of the curbs, since the ground is not shinny... the curb seems to be glowing.

Nice tree vigneting technique. :o it does look like a photo.!

Since we seem to be posting various RC5 testrenderings in this thread here comes one i pieced together today in a studiosetup i made in C4D. :)

It's only 640x480 because i render during daytime on a puter with 256mb ram and it's kinda limiting. Anyways i let this one cook for 2 hours and it reached sampling level 12,57 in that time.

RC5 kicks butt! :P

This all sounds great! I'm going to check it out a.s.a.p.. Before I do, I've got a few questions after having mainly worked with the beta so far.

1: What's the difference in workflow as opposed to rendering from Max with the beta. Do we have to start up Maxwell Studio and render from there?

2: Are there any settings that need to be adjusted after importing a scene into Maxwell Studio, such as light strength, material settings etc., or is this fixed?

3: After installation, in what folder should the License.dat file be placed?

Thanks and cheers,

Metin

here are my first tests. First one comparison with an old beta scene. I used exactly the same scene just exported for studio, but i think it's pretty hard to compare the two engines as materials properties have change and thus the engine shouldn't react in the same way, so it would need some tweaking.
No postwork for the two tests...

where did the reflection of the sun go?

strange : sunlight shadows but like overcast lighting quality. Don't look the shadows : you'll never tell this is direct sun lit (and reflections are gone, right).

nope, i think i have to let it run a bit more, because if i remember right the sun reflections appeared after two or three hours... will update it as soon as i can. for now i'm running an other test render :D

first test with rc5 using an old scene and rendering with plugin and studio both turn out the same, no adjustments/changes to anything materials included.

20 mins on low priority
but notice the liquid doesnt keep the colour selected in the c4d dielectric tag settings. also the plane/box/floor its sat on doesnt exsist anywhere in the scene and never showed in the beta renderings any ideas what that can be
doing another test on another test scene as we type/speak

i am a little scared of RC5 i did a test of a sceen that is in development and let it run for 8 hours. and the noise level was very high. i only used sunlight through windows to light the sceen. (i love the new little sun position icon) dual xeon 3.6, 8 gig ram
