great render, a little too blue though. Maybe desaturate the image a little bit (or blue color at render time) to get more of an "icy" feel. Right now bright blue seems crystal (agreeing with Herve').

Not too bad Max ! ....I think if you smoothed the bumpy texture out a little bit, ...it might get a little closer. I can't think where in nature a piece of ice might be constructed with this texture ....not saying it can't happen ...just that it might be a little rare. ....so to the mind and eye ....the immediate thought is not to define it as a piece of ice. .....just presenting a little psychological angle on rendering.

Ah But Ivox3, if Max's ice falls in the forest will it make a sound? (oh sh&t wait... that's a philosophical angle your's is psychological DOH :D ).

Sorry Max, didn't mean to mess with your thread.

Back on topic though: I agree that maybe the ice is a little too "bumpy"

Thanx guys :D

michaelplogue: Thanks :) yep you're right, those things are also needed to make it look real and good, it'll be something i'll try once we have a working RC5, it'll be exciting for sure to see what it'll be able to do.

lsega77: Thanks :) yea it's too blue to be ice, that's something i have to correct either in post or by doing a new rendering.

ivox: Thanx :) there's actually no bumpy texture on this object, all there is is the mesh itself which looks like that. From the start it's a laserscanned stone i used in this test and it's this "displaced/bumpy". However i'll try to smooth out the surface irregularity and make it more like real ice is, perhaps via Zbrush it's easiest to do those things.. i'll try that. Nice input btw ;)

lsega77: Hehe good one :) and i don't mind "thread hijacking" like this, it's funny.

Very cool experimental render .. I look very much forward to see what more you come up with in this direction. Now I cant help stop dreaming about all kinds of winter materials (and models for it) - iceberg, clear ice, ice with subtle snow covering, snow with reflections, icecubes etc. etc.

Wonderful caustics here btw.

Maximus,
When I first seen this image I thought it was a crunched up piece of aluminum foil… thinking about it why don’t you throw a greenish emitter in side of it and make it glow like a kryptonite rock.

have you noticed the blue noise on the right bottom side of the cube? is that a reflecion of the ground ? what about the noise on the ground is that the begining of the caustics forming?
