I'm not a fan of the noise-reducing filters or the "flash" technique.
As for the prevailing style represented on the forum, I think the majority is personal experimentation. Viz is viz - the purpose is to show what the designer is thinking or the dreamer is dreaming.
Over on the Autodesk.vizions forum, someone posted a render of a basement/rec room. He also posted it at 3dcaffeine (I think that was it). Anyway, the crits he received were from completely different points of view. At vizions, the comments were mainly about functional elements of the space, design and layout. At 3dcaffeine, it was about putting beer glasses on the pool table and leaning the cues a certain way to give it a "lived-in" look. So for one group, the priority was the design, and in the other, it was the image. I think the guy's wife just wanted to see if the carpet was going to go with the tile.
