I pretty much get my inspiration from everywhere. It may be a movie, some machine part, construction site, nature etc etc.
I also frequently go trough pages such as abandoned-places.com and similar.

I don´t like to copy something right off, but i pick up a piece here and there and try to combine them into locations that clearly doesn´t or can´t exist, but still have some elements that is recognizable from everyday life. At least for the most part. :)

I use very rough sketches for some parts, but most of the stuff is done directly in 3D. Guess this method has its ups and downs. If i´ve already gone through the modeling process in my head i can finish up a scene pretty fast, but i can just as well waste hours on experimenting with shapes only to find out that they don´t fit in the scene. :)

Update time again.
I did some rough compositions with the city in the back, and also tried putting some buildings closer just to see what it would look like.
I wasn´t to happy with the cramped scene, so i decided to go for the city which was done in Bryce since it can handle larger polycounts with ease.

This one could have been taken directly from a Blade Runner scene.

Truly amazing... !

Ohhhhh I really want to see now a night shot with lights all over and a bit of lens flair and haze. ;o)
