Nico,

Thanks, but this tutorial is old and no longer useful.

What you need to do now is use a planar surface, apply an emitter material to it and put an image in the "MXI Emitter Map" box.

(If you are not familiar) You can search in this forum to find how to convert an image to the MXI format.

I don't think anyone is using the Alpha any more. It just happens that this thread is extremely old :)

Sounds good, but doesn't seem to work with 1_2_2a_beta. Maybe I missed something, but it looks like the MXI Emitter Map box thingy is unavailable still..?

it does, just convert a pic in an mxi with the viewer

Ah I guess it does work a bit... I had a light behind the tv which was so bright
I couldn't tell the tv was emitting light.

Ok, still I'm having trouble with it:

- The light emitted seems low, not enough. I'm using a 500 W emitter now.
Does it have to be a plane object? It's a box now. In the maxwell viewer during rendering I see something resembling light on the plane object thats right under the tv. In the final rendered jpg file its gone...black...

- The mxi texture map stretches on the surface and it's also rotated.
The box has normal box mapping to it.

See the original jpg I converted with the viewer to a mxi map and the
rendered image so far.

When you convert the jpg to mxi you have the options to change the intensity of the resulting mxi, and that's the intensity that will be "embedded" into the mxi when you load it in the emitter material. When you load an mxi, the W setting on the emitter is disabled.

Adjust your mapping on the box so the mxi is properly rotated.

Yay! I see a bit of yellow on the plane object!

- Changed intensity of mxi from 1 to 10.
- Rotated map by rotating box map gizmo.

+ important !: I forgot to give the plane object a maxwell material ! Duh.
Makes a huge difference, keep forgetting that...

Thank you for the advice !

Last thing that puzzles me though is the difference between the image that
I see being rendered in maxwell viewer (being lighter) and the final image
viewed by windows explorer. Maybe a colour space issue?

Hi Thomas,

I'm trying to re-create your "Television effect" using your method shown here: http://www.maxwellrender.com/forum/view ... &start=135
But I can't seem to make it work. Could you explain it further or even (god forbid!) post the scene, so I can figure it out myself?

Sure man, I could help you figure it out, but why on earth make it hard on yourself ? I do not use this old technique anymore myself. The best method right now is the MXI emitter.

New people here who didn't live Alpha time, don't understand the problem
Threads concerning Alpha should be mentioned with an "obsolete" quote

Ok, I see.

But, how do I create the "television effect" with the MXI emitter?

Check the tutorial section:
http://www.maxwellrender.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3536

Scroll down to the "Techniques/Experiements" and you will see an entry for MXI emitters.

Basically you convert a JPG to MXI via the Maxwell viewer (adjust the brightness there) and then use the MXI as a map for your emitter plane.
