Yes, vector displacement ... but the question is, how in the world are you going to create those maps ?

If you have to actually sculpt the gometry in the first place, then why do you need the displacement afterwords?
You've got real geometry!

Well, so you don't have a 4 million polygon mesh in the viewport, trying to manipulate it, adjust it's UVs or animate it :)

Since this is turning into a big displacement thread...

I'm trying to model the vase shown in the first photo below. The second image is my first attempt. As you can see the displacement map works fine on the planar objects but not on the vase itself.
I'm using a very high resolution map created in photoshop, slightly blurred to get a smoother result (third image below). Still the vase comes our rather jagged... In order to get a smoother render, do I increase the displacement precision (currently 64) or work on the map itself?

Smoothing is on.

By the way what are the limits (min-max) for the precision?

Make sure your vase has enough evenly distributed polygons in the base mesh. At least specifically in that area. ;)

floor and jars are with displacement.

That floor totally rocks!!
any chance to see the displacement map?

I would like to know this too. I asked it once before and didn't get an answer either. NL - is there a "meaningful" range to this, sort of like there is for bump values in MW?

And would be nice to have a way of estimating a value for the precision beforehand, instead of try and error. What's the meaning of the number?

There is no real Limit,...but at a point you will not see more precision,...so I think you will not need to go higher than SP 150.
