:D Haha. Looks awesome guys. I'm especially interested in the 'requires very little extra memory' aspect. I'm curious about the hit on render-time, but the results certainly look like they'd be worth it.

Impressive stuff :)

awsome!

Does it work with color maps or just greyscale maps?

anyway, those are great news, I hope we can play with that soon.

Well holy shit NL! I only heard of PRMan having displacement that powerful.

Very, very impressive. But let try to understant displacement. Can I use any map texture and just tell the material editor what parts of the texture have to show different depth? or how does this thing works?
can some one explain the mechanis of displacement?

Well, ... without ever using the feature, .. I'm going to guess that maybe there's a setting for the maximum Z point within any given map, ie, ...you specify what the maximum distance of the brightest part of the map and the rest of the gray scale displaces accordingly ....... ???

I'd guess you control it via the textures greyscale intensity just like you do with bumpmaps, the whiter the color is the higher it will displace, the darker ithe color the less it will displace the surface. Hehe, i huess that's what Chris just said, doh! :D

NL, will it be possible to displace the surface using negative values aswell ?
And will displacement increase the total noiselevel during rendering of a scene ?

Great news for our community!
What limits can be reached with that kind of displacement technique? Could it lower maximum render size resolution, and how much it slowers rendering? I hope not very much, as I hate to model every damn thing for m~r to render.

I am completely astonished by the skyscrapers pic! Now i fell very little forward looking since my best wish was to use displacement for brick walls!

what will maxwells displacement use as the 0-level? a mid grey like zbrushes output or black like mental ray?

it looks really good!

There is a param that lets you use either black=0 or grey=0, so yes negative displacements are possible too of course.

[I guess Mihai's quicker than me... ]

Hi JDHill
i have a question on the NL Team.
What is the right way to learn the Maxwellrender ?
PlugIn or Studio ???
Rendering with the plugins from the other programms Maya,Max, Cinema .......or Rendering withe the exportfiles direct in the Maxwellstudio ???
I think it is an individual taste.
I have Cinema and Archicad but i like to work in the Maxwellstudio
It is right or wrong? the plugins in the future are better and have more feature as the Maxwellstudio ?
or the studio is continued to remove
Please help me, that make me headache

Thx
Matthias

sorry for my english

Personally, I think the same and I cannot do without it. No matter which plugin you use, Studio is always something good to have.
