This happens when editing a material that already has maps. If i try to change the maps used in any of the channels, studio doesn't show anymore for that material the texture but the standard alphanumeric cardboard

After loading the new texture, try clicking the eye icon in the material editor and choosing that texture. Does it appear in the viewport?

Yes it does! Thanks a lot Mihai, didn't know about this feature. Really useful.

While this does work, is there a reason it doesn't automatically refresh? The obvious design choice would be to have it always display the texture in the first layer, unless the user selects a different one. I also find if I change the tiling, I have to manually click the Eye Thing to get it to refresh in the viewport. Certainly not the first thing on my list of things to fix, but on the list nonetheless.
