I installed Maxwell3, the license server and started Maxwell Render 3 to activate my floating license.
After that I started Maxwell Studio 3 and it asked me to run the activation tool, which I did.
I connected to the license server already running and got Studio to work properly!

NOW....

After I closed Studio and immediately reopened it I got the message that I am running an unregistered version and it asked me to reconnect to the license server.
I have to do this every time I open Studio now. Sometimes, but rarely, it finds the license and starts normally showing that I have a license while starting. But most of the times it asks for the license.

I checked the manual and found that this might have to do with another program using the same RLM server but I could not resolve this issue.

Any help would be appreciated!!!!

And additionally the same happens now on my Mac running Windows 8. Maxwell render finds the license, Maxwell Studio does not and even refuses to infall it when directed to the license server running on my MacPro.

Sorry for all this trouble...lets try to go step by step:

You do NOT need to also license Studio separately. If after installing and licensing Maxwell, you reboot, you start Maxwell.exe and you see that it find the license correctly, then the licensing/RLM server part is ok.

Now on OSX, if Studio complains like this maybe you need to first go to "System Preferences" > Security and set the execution of applications from everywhere to launch Studio the first time. After executing once you can set the permissions again to the default value. Start Studio now and see if it can connect to the license server correctly.

Something weird might have happened if you reactivated your license also when Studio asked. On OSX, do you have two .lic files in: /Users/Shared/NextLimit/rlm_nl/licenses (floating license)

If you open a browser window on the computer that's running the RLM server and type localhost:5054, does the RLM interface appear?

So the steps to check if something goes wrong with the licensing (and open Maxwell to find out if you get any errors, NOT Studio. Check the Console in Maxwell):

- make sure you reboot the computer (both on Win and OSX) after installing the license server
- you only need to install the RLM server on ONE computer, not on all of them
- on the computer where you install the RLM server, you need to choose "Activate license manager" option in the license activator
- on the computers that do NOT need RLM, you need to choose "Activate this machine" and NOT "Activate license manager".
- is the RLM server running?
- is a firewall blocking any Maxwell applications and/or rlm.exe?
- are there actually any license files in the location they are supposed to be (for these locations please check the Licensing page in the docs)

I can start Maxwell Render just FINE, Only Maxwell Studio keeps asking for my license. Maxwell Render also states under Help/License that I do have a poper license installed!

- you only need to install the RLM server on ONE computer, not on all of them Right, I ONLY installed it on this ONE MACPRO and on no other machine!

- on the computers that do NOT need RLM, you need to choose "Activate this machine" and NOT "Activate license manager". I chose: Connect to the license Manager already running. I did that for both MacPros, the one running the License server and the one running Windows 8

Studio is RUNNING and my test render also started rendering on Maxwell Render!

BUT, still can not get the Win 8 MACPro to find the license for Maxwell Studio. Maxwell Render ( on the Win 8 Machine) finds the License at Q2-Main.local ( which is the MacPro running the license server.

Ok, I tried to get the MacPro runnig Win 8 to connect o the license server on my second MacPro.

I would not work and this is what i found in the console after opening Maxwell render:

Probably windows doesn't understand that hostname. So write the IP of the MacPro machine instead. You have to write this in the maxwell_license.lic found on this computer, which contains only one line.

Thanks again for the support, I finally got it sorted out.

It finally works cause I changed the line in the "maxwell_license.lic" on the host computer that is running the license server from the computer's name to the computers IP address, in my case 10.0.1.2, saved the file.

After that I checked if my Windows 8 computer had the old name in the maxwell_license.lic, which was the case. Changed that one also to the IP of the host computer (10.0.1.2) , ran the license activator program on the windows 8 MacPro with full admin rights, launched the licenseactivator.exe directly from the Maxwell program folder by right clicking and selecting "Run as administrator" and BINGO!

ALL GOOD!

It wasn't necessary to run the licensing again on the Win machine. It was only needed to change the line to specify IP instead of the old computer name. The computers that don't have RLM installed don't need anything else other than that license file with one line. Maxwell asks at start-up, where should I grab my license file from? And that file simply says: There!

So in 90% of cases it's either that the rlm server isn't actually installed on any of the computers, or that a Firewall is blocking access to either Maxwell or RLM. In your case it was also necessary to use IP instead of name, probably because of the mixed OS situation.

Yes, you are correct, and I also forgot to turn off my OSX firewall, that didn't help either!
