Good morning friends,

Looking at the Manual (very well written, thank you) we have a number of issues that we would like to follow up on:

1) On p. 33 Film Back: In a real camera the size of the film affects how big one can blow up an image (without getting too grainy). It isn't clear what exactly is the point here. How do we decide what size film we want to use? For the average architectural interior what size film would one use? How does the film size relate to the Rendering output size? And how do the two relate to how big you want to be able to print the resulting rendering?

2) On p. 35 Output Resolution: Quoting the Manual:

"By default, the camera uses what it calld the "Viewport" preset. When this is the chosen preset, the plugin will manage the output resolution based on the physical size of the associated viewport."

-- One usually generates a rendering out of the image in Rhino's Perspective viewport (right?) By "physical size of the associated viewport" are you referring to how big that viewport is on the screen? Meaning how big in inches (width x height). Then the Manual says:

"If, at any time, manual changes are made which affect the image or film size, the camera will switch to using the "Manual" preset.

-- By "manual changes" do you mean if we physically make the Perspective viewport bigger or smaller?

Thank you

1. You choose film size solely based on your desired composition. As Maxwell is not subject to physical degradation of real film, you do not worry about film-related quality issues. Film relates to output resolution only in terms of aspect ratio.

2. Though I am sure many people render based on the viewport size, there is nothing which says that this must be the case. 'Viewport' mode is the default, simply because that is generally how people would assume a renderer to work, but as evidenced by the need and presence of the 'Manual' mode, it is oftentimes desirable to decouple Maxwell's output from the physical size/shape of the Rhino viewport being used to frame the image.

The plugin (and Maxwell) is never concerned with inch-sized output; output resolution is always specified in terms of pixels. So when the manual says something about the physical size of the veiwport, that is what it is talking about: the pixel dimensions of the viewport.

By 'manual' changes, no, I mean directly changing the output resolution or film size of the plugin by typing numbers into the Scene Manager > Camera page. In 'Viewport' mode, the plugin is listening to Rhino to find out when the viewport size has changed; by typing numbers in manually, you are effectively telling the plugin to stop listening for those changes; if it did not stop automatically updating the values, then the numbers you had just typed in would be lost. That's why it is called 'Manual' mode, and why the plugin switches to that mode whenever you manually edit the values.
