Please post here anything else (not relating to Maxwell technical matters)

Hi,
Some of the old guys will remember me, but most won´t. I´left Maxwell because I was disappointed in the handling of the RCx releases of Mawell 1. Later came back to give my felicitations to the hugely improved customer service etc. See this post http://www.maxwellrender.com/forum/view ... 46#p252646

My question is not related to Maxwell, but to a particular problem and I know that this is a very helpful community.

I have been out of the 3d business for five years at least but have been in the business for a very long time, wrote one of the first commercial renderers on the market (Pre-3Studio times), wrote Mpeg encoders and decoders before these were commercially available etc. However my programming experience is now twenty years old and my knowledge of the three 3d market stopped when I decided to emigrate and closed my company which sold high end hard-and software solutions to clients as dealer and/or exclusive distributor of specialized products. This as background for the following silly questions.

I want to go back into the business but have a lot of compressed avi´s, mpegs etc which carry logo´s of my old company or no loga at all. Also I´m not happy with the speed of the animation path etc. What I would like to do is recompress them efficiently and adding frames in the process on selected parts. BUT I lost the original models so can´t rerender.

The questions:
A) what is the best `possible recompression tool (I downloaded a Free Avi Converter and while flexilble the quality decreaded enormously)

B) is there a way to decompress the whole video file into individual frames. I do realize that f.i. mpeg has only useable I-frames, but if I could extract these I could edit these individually with batch transactions and recode them afterwards.

C) In a general way is it possible to rubberstamp animations with a new logo on the place of the old one or just add one if it´s lacking at all.

D) Could I by method B extend the length of some flytroughs on selected parts by adding muliple identical frames on that particular spot.

As you can see I know not a lot about video-editing so maybe these are very easy questions. I would be grateful for partial answers on one of the above questions as well.

Best regards,
Max3D

I don't know what the best is anymore -- but I use QT Pro a lot.

B) is there a way to decompress the whole video file into individual frames. I do realize that f.i. mpeg has only useable I-frames, but if I could extract these I could edit these individually with batch transactions and recode them afterwards.

QuikTime Pro does this -- don't know of others, but I'm sure it isn't a rare ability.

C) In a general way is it possible to rubberstamp animations with a new logo on the place of the old one or just add one if it´s lacking at all.

Easy enough with a batch file via Photoshop or similar (Maybe Gimp ??)

D) Could I by method B extend the length of some flytroughs on selected parts by adding muliple identical frames on that particular spot.

Yes, but it doesn't really extend frames, ..it causes the animation to appear to pause if you use too many identical frames in succession. In After Effects there are different ways to use Time Compression for extending/adding identical frames, but I'm only familiar with creating slow-motion effects. Still, maybe something helpful there .. You could try the demo and learn here: http://www.videocopilot.net/basic/
