Thanks mate!

Thanks Brian! I'll take your point on the backdrop and fix that, as you can imagine the background was added post pro! But yes then doesn't show the correct reflections on the tiles. Funny thing is when you think about it - it takes the eye of a designer or render artist to pick those things up, Joe Average would never notice! But I think we aim to achieve 90% of our realism to the subject of our peers!
Josephus wrote: yes, VERY nicely done Richard. Are the tree shadows from a 2d clip map or 3d tree?
Thanks mate! Yeah the trees are just a simple clip placed directly outside the opening, I found I had to keep them really close to the opening or the shadows really softened too much! Strange as if it where an exterior scene you'd be hard pressed to achieve that!

.. which I think is awesome.
Mate it wasn't until you made mention of it that I could see some commonality to an old ad!
jvanmetre wrote: yes, definitely has a feel...must be the earth tones.
Cheers mate! Yeah I think both that and funnily enough the architrave around the doors which is a common lower end finish that is still commonly used here still is most homes.
Brodie wrote: The first thing that jumps out at me is the general feel of it which is extremely interesting. I agree that it does have a bit of a 70's architecture magazine quality to it, but I'm not so sure it's just the material colors. Was this something intentional Richard? It strikes me that it may have something to do with the lighting which I know you spent some time on and/or perhaps some Photoshop trickery. Care to comment on the process?
Thanks Brodes! No mate not intentional at all, though happy with the outcome! As Jvanmetre suggest I think the feel of an old ad comes from the earthy tones (not my design but for colour scheme) the arhitraves as suggested above, the simple camera angle – as I suggested in the first test posted on the SCF this was limited as the scene just lost all interest from any other angle. And I think also and possibly more so – the dirty shadows where foliage has been used to create a garden home feel.
I think most later renders or shoots would aim to keep it clean and something I intentionally avoided.
Mate no trickery but yes lots of post processing. As mentioned earlier the use of displacement really slowed the render up and so much so I just set my craptop to run the render for 150 hrs (yep you read right) and it only reached SL 14.8 – not nearly enough to clean well. So in processing I separated each material and denoised with Neat Image so as to not lose edge fidelity and to some of the separations I actually applied a fine stroke to define the egde.
So much effort needed to expose the fact that I REALLY do need a hardware upgrade and soon.
The scene lighting comprised what you can see, physical sky and 5 additional emitter panels to flood the scene.
One thing I found interesting in testing was that using panel lights with blinkers sounding them (don’t know the technical term – but the bits that direct the lights (help?)). Keeping a gap between the edge of the panel (say 20-30mm) and the blinkers actually and effectively really softened the hard edge of the panel by allowing background environment light to mix with the panel light.
Finally thanks all for the professional eyes, now I look forward to doing a few more interiors and of course more so getting some new hardware!!
Here is an overview of the scene setup.
