As far as I know...

1) Objects further away get more ocean-colored, of course, but the attenuation happens at different wavelengths at different rates.

2) Objects right in front of your face lose color in different wavelengths at different depths, because the objects are lit by sunlight which has passed through a lot of seawater to reach the object and you.

3) Looking up to the surface or down to the bottom entails shorter sight lines, which makes the water more cyan. Looking out to the undersea horizon makes for more indigo water.

4) Water contaminants, suspended particles, have their own effects.
