This is a humorous satire of the FIFA World Cup trophy I did for my editorial style 3D illustration portfolio. It was done with Maya, Mudbox (for Mac!) and rendered in your favourite renderer. It was a complete pain in the ass to light as you can imagine with it being made of mottled gold. The final image is a composite of a few renders and colour-tweaked in Photoshop.

as for the banding issue, I went to 16-bit, which took care of a lot of it, and then did some gaussian blur and added noise.

well it's very contrasty since it's more of an illustration than an archviz type thing. Picture it next to a headline about the death of sportsmanship or something and it makes more sense.
