Hey guys, I'm working with a flash template that has some animations (series of jpg)

The original files are:
FLA = 9,838 KB
SWF = 2,002 KB

Now, I needed to edit the animation and take a couple of thins out of the bg

when I uploaded the files back again, this is what I got:
FLA = 19,507 KB
SWF = 2,758 KB

So I went Back to phoshop and saved the jpg animation using: (save for web - optimize for file size)
Amazingly, this lowered my FLA :D but increased my SWF :? what gives???

FLA = 11,800 KB
SWF = 3,100 KB
What am I doing wrong!!!??? I really want to keep my file size in 2MB not 3!

hehe this is strange !

Are you sure you delete all reference to previous image ? Because it would meen first size 2000ko then 750ko then 350ko would seem logical if you compressed more and more.. does it make sense with the jpgs filesize?

Otherwise try doing a flv instead of jpgs it will probably be lighter:

then import in flash.

in my understanding of flash, it would be better to save the jpg not into the .swf file, but seperately. and then import them on loading (e.g. with a preloader)

When I import the files, I use the "replace the old ones with the new ones" option... The only thing that I see different is that the new ones doesn't have the "allow smoothing" on in the properties. But I don't know how to turn them all on (I could try doing one by one)... however, I don't know if that will lower my SWF at all :?:

First, I can't redo the animation, because it was not done by me... I mean I have the max files... but I don't know how to use 3DSmax, it would be a mess....

Second I'm importing the files a series of .jpg into the FLA and after that I publish the thing (SWF).

The whole thing is done... it has pre-loader in the beginning and I don't want to mess up with it either.

is it more clear now?

You could really skip that part if you replace it by an action script... that's what I tried to explain.
Btw, how big are all your .jpg's together? If they are more than 3MB, then my proposition would be pointless :)
One thing you could also check: are there any more export settings? eg. one, where you can select the quality of the export? Maybe flash translates the jpg's into another format on exporting (maybe even also jpg but with a fixed quality)

First... I would like to apologize as my flash experience is pretty limited... :lol:

I made a new test:
First I exported the animation from the flash file (FLA) and then I imported again (without changing anything on the files)... The result when I published it was:

SWF = 4,357 KB :shock:

all the animations together (I think they are 6 animations) = 8 MB

After my optimization = 3,601,259 bytes

Image

is there any other settings that I should be concern about? This one doesn't change at all from the original or my tests[/img]

In flash you can compress the whole movie to be published and the images.
....select images at the library an decrease the quality

If it's an animation I would try to work with an flv.

PROBLEM SOLVED... :D My version of Flash doesn't allow me to select multiple images and change their properties (AKA Macromedia Flash 8 blows! :lol: )

But CS4 Flash can... I was able to to reduce my swf to 1,896 KB :wink:

I guess I will have to keep working on flash 8 and once I'm all done, have someone else change the settings of the movies :D

Yes, Flash 8 doesn't allow to change multiple image properties at the same time, you have to do it 1 by 1 :?

Flash CS4... :wink:
