hi !

is there a way to create instances that display always as bounding boxes and appear only at rendertime ?

or could this be set up via LOD somehow ? (i never worked with LOD before ..)

thanks for any input !

What about this approach? (works on maya 2009):
  • - Create a layer named Instances
    - Select it, Right click on it and select set selected layers to Bounding Box
    - Add your instances to this layer
That's it. They will be displayed as boxes and rendered normally.

When it may not work: if you parent your instances to some other object that is displayed normally and/or if the parent object is in another layer with other settings.

Good luck!

ah this is beautiful !

thanks a LOT !

i've never seen those layer settings for the display (normal, as BB)... this is a great thing !

if only instances had correct history so even instances could be instanced and everything would display correct ... or if the original were scales all the instances would follow that transformation.

well, but this is great !
thanks !
