Hi all, sorry that I haven't been in here for so long.. but I need some help with Rhino on a small arch-vis job.
I'm a product designer so I'm not used to work on such large scale object and now it seems I've run into a technical problem with Rhino.
It seems pretty much impossible to find a way to properly tesselate the objects I'm creating. It's as if everything is super low-res polygon wise, until you zoom out really far away.
I'm working on a small building in the midst of a neighbourhood, I set my units to meters (started with a large objects, units meters file). I thought this would result in a proper file to work with, but this is pretty much what I get. I've tried changing the units to mm's or playing with the tolerances but it stays crap like this no matter what:



If anybody can give me some useful info it would really mean a lot to me.. I just don't know what is causing this and how to solve it.
This is pretty much the only community that I know that has arch-vis people on it, so that's why I post this here.

Ugh this is looking really hopeless, I tried setting the absolute tolerance to 1e-15 in the Units and Page Units tabs.. still nothing. Each time I also remesh the objects btw...

Hi dutch_designer,

A couple of things here:

- model in your scale of choice, it has no effect on the meshes
- set tolerances based on your realistic needs
- control tesselation using the Document Properties > Mesh page

Additionally, if you open the Object Properties window, then select an object (or objects), you can enable the Render Mesh Settings > Custom Mesh option and then adjust the tesselation for the selection by clicking the Adjust button.

Hi JDHill, thank you for your suggestions, they will probably go quite some way towards at least clearing up things in my brain.. I will give it another shot tomorrow morning, I will keep you guys posted.

NEVER, NEVER, NEVER mess with the units settings once you have started modeling!!!!

As I can see, for working with meters, you have everything setup right, stick with it and don't change a thing.

As JDHill suggested, render and viewport tessalation is adjusted in the Mesh page, although I tend to use a hand meshed model just for rendering.

The trick in the mesh page is to use the custom setting:

1. Set all values to 0.0
2. Uncheck Refine, Jagged and Simple
3. Set Maximum Aspect Ratio to 1.0 to get quads/triangles that are as "square" as possible (For long objects, such as an uncapped cylinder, set this to 0.0 to get nice long quads)

The single most important setting is "Maximum Distance, Edge to Surface". This controls how coarse or dense the mesh will be. It represents the distance (in current units) from the true surface to the mesh; the lower this number, the better the tessalation, with denser meshes.

Let me know if that works.

Tassos, thank you for your help!! In my case though it didn't seem to do much for some reason.. I tried playing with the settings you mentioned but it didn't work.

For future reference, here's how I ended up 'solving' the problem.

I exported all the objects to IGES and set the units in the IGES file to mm and when asked to scale the objects for export, I answered yes.
I made a new Rhino file to put everything together, chose the small objects, mm template and created a new object roughly the size of a building to check the meshing. When that was ok, I imported the IGES files and joined everything up. This way finally the meshing was OK.

What a relief.. wow..

Is the model located near 0,0,0? If you built the model from imported cadd docs, sometimes they are miles away from the origin and Rhino doesn't seem to like that.
