If I can't find a cheap Breuer B3 I'll probably make one myself....cheap as chips!

Now i see what it's going to look like  sweet! lotsa big windows there too, you're going to need good insulation to not loose to much heat through all that glass, and a couple of good alarmsystems with glassbreaking detectors is a must-have.

Looking forward to the next update :)

Thanks Fernando :) yes I must remember to take pics as this thing starts to head skywards.

Hey Magnus, thanks for the 'push' to begin this wip thread :) needed a kick up the backside.
The glass is all part of the 'passive solar' approach...........the roof will have a number of solar panels [eventually] rated at around the 400W mark....enough to power a reasonable amount of low-energy tech I hope. :)

As to security, crime's ultra-low here as everyone knows everyone else.......it's a small place!

Thanks JC, Frances. :)
Normally up here, when it hits 10degreesC everyone's out in their t-shirts, complainin' about the barmy weather...... I guess it's all relative!

You're welcome Stu :) it's interesting to see what your buildingplans look like in 3d. like this and the progress of your work both in real life and in 3d at the same time. A kick is good sometimes, if it's in the right direction.. :)

Stu, maybe you should show Frances some photos when you wear the Scottish kilt as you're outdoors building the office :D

Wouldn't be a pretty sight Max, too much wind up here!
Compared to the rest of Scotland as a whole, there's very few 'frock jocks' up here...........probably because your native Orcadian thinks of him/herself as Viking rather than Pict........and Orkney belonged to the Norwegian crown until about 1500AD, when it was given to the king of Scots as a wedding dowry.

And me, well I'm just a pampered English immigrant who grew up on the banks of the Thames.......park cockney part kentishman..........so maybe my ancestors were Jutes who came over in the 6th century, which maybe makes me just a touch viking if we go back far enough. But I digress!..........more updates on the hole coming soon. :)

Hah, i thought the exact opposite - isn't that inevitably gonna act as a big greenhouse? But if it's never that hot outside, it's not a problem of course.

Stuart, is it your own shot at the "2016 house", sort of? :)

Certainly some elements of that project have informed a few decisions.......mainly the idea of light/heat capture, we get a lot of light but not much heat up here & I want to keep the heating bills as low as possible.

In winter, the triple glazing will help a lot, as will the solid-fuel peat burner I'll be putting in........but that's for the next set of renders.

just as a passing comment it looks like a heat loss build rather than a heat gain one.

I'm studying this at the moment in Uni and up to now my knowledge suggests that so much glass at your lattitude is not a good idea.

I'm more often wrong than right though so take this into account.

all the best
