Hi am very new to maya and have used it to generate some simple animations...

however when I choose export the files it generates each mxs file in this format:

animationrender.01.mxs... and i need it to be animationrender.0001.mxs...

otherwise it wont render teh files...

anyway of fixing this ?

You can chenge the padding in Render globals, Common Tab and Frame padding.
