Hi,

I want to upgrade my PC system early next year. I am currently researching the ideal Maxwell rendermonster. Although my wallet will be entirely empty, I am thinking about a dual quadcore system [drool].

But ... does having 8 cores in one machine mean that I have to buy an additional Maxwell license as well? Frankly that would suck in my humble opinion. I think one Maxwell license should cover one machine, regardless of the amount of cores present in that machine.

And another question: is there already a 64-bit version of Maxwell that utilizes the 64-bit power of a new machine with Windows Vista?

Any tips and feedback regarding this matter will be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

unless the guys in madrid come up with a new licensing scheme, I'm afraid the answer is yes.

not yet, but I gather they're working on it. and possibly it may be out before christmas.

Mihai, I vaguely remember the extra license gift, but I guess I didn't pay much attention to it, because it wasn't necessary at the time.

I assume the license gift still stands? And how can I make use of it? Can I simply request a free extra license after I've bought my new machine in early 2007?

i've been looking into 8 core machines a lot now.

this is a damn sad story.

after many calculations i think an octopus will render the maxwell 1.1 testrender in about 23 minutes based on calculations of some cinebench results.
after seeing that the 1.83 GHz xeon 5300 performs similar as a 3.o GHz 5150/5160 Xeon dual core and costs a LOT more it seems not a good idea to invest in one of these machines.
i configured on the dell homepage an octo machine which's speed is about the quad mac pro and costs a nearly the double of a mac pro. unless they give You the 2.66 GHz processors this is just wasted money.

look at the test charts of the maxwell render test.

best is waiting (as i do) until january 7th, apple expo, where new models will be announced. but i doubt they will release an octo 2.66 just a month after the announcement. maybe a 2.33 GHz model.

i'd think:
1) wait until january and see what apple will announce and use win 64 xp.
OR
2) buy two MacPros 3.0 GHz for the same money and get a lot more speed than with one octo system

i've seen that the dell precision 690 with the same ingredients as a mac pro has costs about 1700 $ more than the mac. this is a f'n rip-off !

Its standard for most people, just funny for me. I compare it to 'this week I am going to buy 8 engines for my car'.

Why not buy a render farm?... I suppose render farms are more hassle for images, having to merge image after etc.

you could still buy 2 dual dual core mobos instead of one octo for approximatly the same price, make it a dual dual core opteron 285 or xeon 5160 based and you'll have far more power i guess, sure i dont know how well maxwell net render option work efficiently tought

We plan to buy a Quad Opteron Dual Core in january.
The new one.
The power consumming is most cheaper than two quad core.
And we ll have a real Brut power render solution for the Quick Work For Quick Clients... lol

So we ll see at this time...
