Hey guys. Long story short, my hosting died a while back and I haven't got around to finding anything else. I've been looking about and saw this site :

and was wondering if anybody has dealt with them, heard of them, or can find anything wrong with them. I'm thinking about getting the unlimited package, as it seems to cater for pretty much all of my needs (the ones to do with web hosting anyway )

I use site5.com and after having tried 'a lot' of hosters - they are the best - good bandwidth, cheap price, fully functional (not crippled by low php memory etc. )

I have the middle plan (4 domains)

unlimited domain pointers
unlimited email
unlimited ftp
11 gb storage
and everything else I can't think of is pretty much unlimited - except total monthly bandwidth which is around 40gb or so ( I think I use on average 2% of the total)

I’m pointing a lot of my clients to host gator.. they seem pretty well..

Also one note, I would never have my domain registered or transferred to a web host. Use something like godaddy.com for your domain names. Always keep domain names and web hosting separate.. Seen a lot of problems in the past…

btw, if any of your guys do webdesign, do you let your client take care of the hosting part himself or do you help him set up an account somewhere, or do you even run your own server (expensive ) and host all projects yourself?

It's not expensive to setup your own webserver, if you got a old slow PC laying around and a permanent internet hookup then you can toss in a Apache server which is free and kick it up and running within an 30min to hour or less depending on your skills. Or if you wanna spend some cash then you can get Instantservers Miniportal which is a great server based on Apache, it's alot easier to configure and setup and also to maintain. As a bonus it's very stable

In Sweden, no biggie - but have a look at the lousy connections we germans have to put up with (16kbyte/s upstream anyone?)

It's getting better though thanks to emerging competition, so i'll keep an eye on your idea as it indeed allows freedom and customizability beyond that of any rented webserver package.

Hey Adrain,
Most of the time I help my client out with setting up a hosting account. Maybe you should look into a reseller account if you want to offer web hosting to your clients.

About running a server at home, I would advice not to unless you have a good connection (at least half of a T1 line). Using a high-speed internet connection like DSL or cable just wont cut it, only good if you have one or two people coming to your website. But on that note I do have a local server that I use for development, depending on what I'm working on I give the client access to the server.

domains can you setup for free at places like dyndns.com which is a great one i used for my max.is-a-geek.com site for a long time now.

Max, I think in Sweden you guys have those "special" connections that have the same bandwidh up or down, so it can be quite practical to have your own servers. But i think in most other countries unless you pay a lot of money you'll have maybe a 8mb down but only 100kb up, so 50 people trying to connect to your server and download your pages.....it's going to be slow.
