There is a program I'm thinking of buying but it uses a dongle and with the extremely high crime rate in South Africa, I'm hesitant about buying it. Is there any way of backing up dongles?

No you cannot backup dongles like that, bypassing it would mean you break the copyright law and probably some other laws aswell so that won't work. Btw, i know which "software" you're planning on buying as i seen you asking this question on another forum...

You can somewhat secure the dongle by installing it inside the case and locking the case. Alternatively, if the licence system allow this, you can have it on a remote computer stored in a safe place.

Last year our office computers were stolen. My wife was held up at her temp work place. Her other temp work place was broken into and computers stolen. My previous place of employment was broken into and some computers were stolen. I was mugged. My car was broken into and the battery and sound system stolen. I was hi-jacked. Need I go on?

Generally, a sense of insecurity. You literally have to walk looking over your shoulders constantly. And on top of all that one has to put up with racism from whites and blacks (I'm Indian). I just wish to get out of this country.

Jesus, sorry to hear that. I know a chap whos going to South Africa for his honeymoon, he's convinced its the nicest place on earth .I'll tell him not to bring his laptop (bad joke - but if he brings his laptop on his honeymoon i suppose his wife would axe murder him anyways). Hope that situation gets better, just keep the dongles in your pocket when you leave the office never heard of anyone getting mugged for a dongle (yet)...

as i said in te mail,

i will check what solution we have. i an sure we sinf some ensurement for you with vlado.

just have a bit more patience, because 1.5 isnt out yet, i cant make any 100% promises. as far as i can remember there was a solution to run a license via the internet and only have to dongle as a backup in the safe, in case the internet is down. the dongle system chaos uses is very modern.

but it sounds very bad in your Country, how do you protect your hardware?
i guesss this is also very expensive?

That explains all the South African accents in the area where I live, Auckland New Zealand. There has been a lot of emigration from South Africa to New Zealand over the past decade.

i went to capetown in 1998, wanted to settle there, found a job as arch in a big firm there, but finally got scared ( wife got scared).. it was 1998, and heard things got 10x worse since....
Also hear many stories of english speaking non blacks speaking of leaving the place.. getting their goods in safe place in case...

Burglar bars, alarm systems and a lot of praying. But I still hear of some cases where burglaries still happen.

I was prepared to immigrate to New Zealand as well but I could be going somewhere else (I don't want to count chickens).
