Hi

Im looking to buy a new pc to run Maxwell & Lightwave 9 on.

Ive be having a hunt round but i cant decide between one systme over another system. Do i get a custom built thing? Dual processor? AMD or Intel?

The graphics card dilema is totaly baffeling me.

Im going to spend about £2000.00.

What advice or opinions can you give me.

Thanks

Is there room to be left for the Screen and other peripherals or is the price including those?

Either way you're gonna be able to get a lot for 2000£.

I only know approximate €uro prices from germany:

150€ +/- for the case plus fans (chieftech, lian li)
100-150€ for a meaty PSU.
300€ for a Core2Duo E6600 or 1000€ for a Core2Quad ("Core2Extreme" for now?)
40€ for proper air cooling (e.g. Scythe Infinity/Ninja, Thermalright Ultra 120)
200€ Asus P5W-DH Deluxe
500-600€ 4x1GB DDR2-800 Ram (latency not that important for rendering)
50€ Decently sized SATAII Harddrive
150-300€ For a gfx card, an mid-range Nvidia 7900GS would cost you below 200, i'm looking into the 512MB model myself.

~1600€ (1100£) for a 2core setup. Now depending on what else you need and the UK prices it might just fit your targeted budget. If you want it to be built by someone in the UK you'll have to wait for other answer as i don't know good adresses :o

Well spending then!

My friend just got downsized from his job. He sent me an email today asking if I wanted to buy his new Mac Pro. I would have done that, but I just built a woodcrest myself.

I don't want to spam the forum with PC for sale. In fact I don't know if it's even allowed. If you want info on it go ahead and send me a PM.

I will say that the deal he's offering fits your budget and I would like my fellow Maxwell friends to have the chance on this box before somebody on ebay for instance.

(x2) XEON 2.66GHz Dual-Core 5100 series processors
2 GB Fully Buffered Dimm's (512x4) 667MHz DDR2 ECC fully-buffered DIMM (FB-DIMM) memory
(x2) WD 250GB hard drives Serial ATA 3Gb/s, 7200-rpm, 8MB cache
6x SuperDrive with double-layer support (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)

The computer has Microsoft office for Mac and iLife '06 installed, as well as a bunch of other software.

It has the AppleCare 3 year Warranty:

Yeah it's a drag.

At least he made the purchase because he's a big Mac fan and didn't really need the horse power like we do. So maybe it wont hurt as much.

It's about 1 month old I think. He's asking $2100.00 plus you pay the shipping (it would ship from California). I think he really needs to unload it.

If you're interested pm and I'll give you his contact info.

I bought a new CPU just two weeks ago. I´m very happy with my Intel Core 2 Duo E6700(check the Speed Test).

If you are going to just make some 3d modeling and rendering, I think you can solve graphic gard issue quite easily. I use PNY Quadro FX540 and thats powerful enough for my use. Price: just 230€

My whole CPU(without monitor) cost around 1.500€ 8)

Hi

Thanks for the replys

Unfortunatly Im not in a position to buy it yet (its gonna be a february purchase) so I think the Mac is out.

I had originaly thought that the price for the screen would be in the budget, but if i find the right system and its more than my budget then the screen would be on top.

What benifit would i get from 2 processors?

Dose anyone know what system the guys here at Maxwell are using for there testing?

What am i actualy looking for in a graphics card? I see all these test results on web sites, but they mean nothing to me. Do i want a gaming card?

Twice the speed (compared to a single one of the same type). As a Maxwell user you really wanna have some raw power. Also check out this topic.

They test on many different setups, there's no such thing as an ideal Maxwell system if that's what you mean. OS wise the Windows client is faster than the PPC and x86 Mac versions for now.

1. Enough Memory, 256 or 512MB.
2. A powerful GPU, take something very current as the advances haven't slowed a bit in recent times.

"Gaming cards" usually do the job fine and are what most people use, though some people swear on their (usually very expensive) pro cards.
