i think you need a mix

if you use just texture you are obtain a flat result

this same probleme with a standard grass

Thanks for the reply.

I was thinking along the lines of a texture plus displacement, although I am not sure whether 1.1 supports displacement ?

Years back there was a tool called surface painter for c4d, which would be the second option. Although this tool is discontinued as far as I know and does not work with current c4d versions.

I would go for a underlying texture plus geometry painted on, does anybody know some tool to do so ?

if you use max... maybe use bump to create geometry and then a good texture [depending on how far your view is]... that should do the trick
