It's only a prototype yet. Those are multiple cores to be plugged into a PCI-express slot for big loads of computational data (rendering for example); no GPU there; probably you could plug some of these in parallel. Let your imagination fly!

a lot of hardware arranged around this central component:

Which CPUs did you select?
Currently trying to decide between recycling some x5680s or going for the x5690s.

Also deciding on case...Corsair 800D vs the 2120 Lian-Li.

it's gone for almost a year or longer...

i hope there will be an overclockable board for socket 2011! and affordable K-Xeons. but i'm in doubt about it... :(

still tons of stuff missing, so it will be at least another 2 weeks or so before it's up and running.

just wondering after looking around for HW..
why are u choosing such high grade procesors, asfaik (from reading forums) you will get very similar results with a x5650.

also doesn't the Obsidian 800 need to be modified to hold the board? it is not on evga's list of cases supported:

it is a shame these cases are all ugly and still expensive.. at least lian-li is minimalistic in appearance .. but it would hardly fit under my desk
i am really not sure about the case yet...

The chips with the higher multipliers will give you a bit more headroom when overclocking. I've already got the x5680 is my other machine so I may move those over. x5650 is probably the best bang for buck choice though if starting from scratch.

The 800D does need light modification to fit from what I am reading.

No kidding on the cases. There are only maybe 3 out there that can fit it that don't make me want to throw up.
