the system IS watercooled...

i have a thermaltake "thai chi" tower with water cooling and an active 2 fan radiator sink, that's all built in the tower.


with this config, regularly around 83 to 85 deg, when cpu power is at 100% for longer time. i'll post more exact numbers soon.
the intel desktop utilities hardware monitor got up once to 8 degrees, that's nearly the red part !

what could i change in my config ? it seems running too hot... even with watercooling.

To me it is a high value, at least for air cooling.
I have read across several places on the web that 1.45 volts is a maximum for safe operation with aircooling.
Watercooled pc can go higher without problem.

What are your temp readings when you render the speedtest scene? (coretemp is a good app to get these)

EDIT: At 3ghz I'm stable with the default cpu voltage (1.325 v), I think you could be stable with a lower setting and save some heat. Try something like 1.35v or 1.38v

Woah 85-89°C is really high, and with a watercooling It's a bit freaky.

i think i'll keep these settings.

temperature stable over all cores at 69 degrees while doing the maxwell speedtest 1.1, that's 28 degrees away from max, not 8 !!

benchmark gives: 194.88
time: 33:56

running at 3.45 GHz with 533 MHz ram, which may be a small bottleneck, as we see having a higher frequency but slower rendering

The general guideline is to always keep the voltage in normal range (~1.5 is the max i'd keep a 65nm chip at) so long your load temperatures are high (> ~55°C). So you've pretty much gotten the best out of it now. The high temperature seems common for the Kentsfield btw, others have reported the same. Two additional cores in the same space just don't go unnoticed.

So my advice is to not go any higher on the voltage (or your prechious baby will disassemble itself over time) and enjoy the chip at a 100% stable clockspeed, even if you have to step back a bit. You've passed the whole community either way

yeah, i beat an octo 2.33 xeon by a little with stability problems (but half the price), now i will try and stay where i am, in a safe place.

one minute more or less doesn't really matter ! we all want to enjoy the quality of the renderings done and not the hardware specs.

i'll write more if i find something out something additional !

can you tell us the mainboard and ram type? your fsb-speed is very low. are you able to lower the multi and set the fsb to something around 350-400mhz? since your ram is ddr2 1066 it should be easy to run higher settings.

you should stay below 1,45v with your cpu voltage, max 1,5v with water... above 1,5v is very high! and explains your high temps.

this is a cool cooler. i wanted to buy it too, but this thing is YERY heavy ! could maybe damage Your mainboard/cpu. the problem is because it is very heavy and builds up a momentum while hanging vertically that the cooler lies not 100% flat on the cpu to absorb heat. this cooler is held only by metal clips which are not very strong...

think about this...

Hm yes you're right, it's one heavy thingy.. like 764 grams, close to one kilo heh.. in theory it could damage the motherboard and/or cpu, but i suspect they tested this in the labs before they released it for public sale. Although i'm sure it can still happen it'd be pretty tragic if it did.

About the weight, it probably has both disadvantages and advantages of being that heavy and big. Perhaps it's just good at cooling stuff down.. and not much else ..anyways i ordered a new system a couple of days ago with one of these babies in it, this coming week i should have it.
