The problem with the ribbon is that illuminates without interruptions. I was thinking too about a different emitter placement. 3 proposals:

-some very thin slices of the core sphere made by parallel horizontal planes (let's say 4 or 5);

-some radial stripes under the ring and looking up; this proposal would benefit from the variable thickness of the ring;

-cut the ribbon in stripes:
