I'm just using wireframe in three viewports, and technical in the fourth. I have changed a bunch of settings in both modes. And it's just a 24" screen, kami...perception is everything, I guess. :)

could it be changed so that once we stop fire the image rendered remains in the window's display buffer?
(until fire is restarted)

Just so you know, if you enable cached meshes, the image will stay around until the cache is actually invalidated. When cached meshes are not enabled, disabling Fire clears the cache -- and thereby clears the image.
