Most grateful for ivox's tip but I'm once again feeling a bit frustrated and narrow minded about sss materials -- the singular reason, in my mind, of why you'd want to use sss on a single surface would be for a situation like a diffuser, with a light source behind it.

Can anyone explain a scenario that makes use of a sss materials and a single open surface effectively?

Thanks Ivox- I plan on experimenting with your method in a couple of weeks to see if it would help with jewellery renderings. It would be cool to know why it works though!

there is a command in rhino "Maxwell_extractMaterials" which will translate current materials to maxwell materials within rhino, also helpful when importing obj, or 3ds and such!
