Mate, that is looking really good! Still without displacement?

ah, but still, it is looking really good!

Wouldn't it be possible to create that effect without displacement you reckon? the material model is so powerful and flexible it ought to be possible...

Oh, cool. Thanks so much!

So, let's see.. your mixing two layers, to get the color variance, am I right?

and it seems 4 in bump is enough, i was up around 90-100 without desired effect, that's pretty interesting! But you gave up on the custom falloff alltogether?

Would you mind sharing the displacement settings aswell, I could compare them?

Sure, I used your map of course, with:
Height .5 or 1
Offset 0
Precision 64
Smoothing On

Yeah, I ditched the falloff. Couldn't get it to work right. (I don't use it much.)

Thanks again, I'll keep looking at this tomorrow.

I sort of thought the fall-off thing was made for these strange "shimmery" materials..

Here's a test using the double layer (no diffuse map) and displacement. I've taken down the precision to 16 to improve the render time.

Looking great! (I've made the colors are darker aswell)

Few more test with different colors. The displacement version really kicks, and it seems bump cant really beat it. But i'd love to get this expression using just bump! it ought to be possible since the structure is so small. only 0.7 millimeters displacement height.

Thanks for all the help and feedback Bubbaloo!

That is something strange going on with the polygons in the model. It was worse before but this is a NURBS model and I refined the mesh a bit. It's still there though, and I'm not sure why... perhaps the polygon smoothing does not work when using displacement?

...however, I kept it since it provides some interesting feedback with this kind of material. Looks like someone has brushed it in the wrong direction or something!
