I understand but there is no global conspiracy involving autodesk colonising the moon through proceeds of subscription fees.

Not directed stright at you either rivoli. BTW i was pretty happy with the new poly chamfer tool and being able to spell modifiers names on the keyboard to choose them from the modifier list but for some people it's the simple things < : (not to mention enabling MR to render multiple passses in one, adding object exclusion to the bake AO and the whole baking thing in general).

JTB, customers purchase subscription when they buy MAX, then pay a yearly maintenance fee. For this they get an annual major upgrade of max which is usually released at Siggraph.

eldo, extremely unlikely due to the history dependent nature of max objects. This pretty much makes it impossible to open newer max files in older version. The legacy nature of max (ie persisting with including obselete modules like boolean) allows you to open old max files with new versions.

I think max9 is the best yet with the tenfold increase in viewport speed and stability i think it will be hard to beat. not to mention the memory advantages or working in 64bit but lets wait and see...

I know, didn't take it personally :D

and I agree with you, have used max for ages, and I'm really loving working with number 9. subscription jokes aside, don't really anything to complain about. (and yes, I like the new chamfering too, and the colour picker..)

j_man wrote:Are you guys for real? there is a dedicated team working their socks off to produce a major release for you to use and that's the sort of thanks that they can expect? especially considering the low cost of subscription. shame on you all.
My complaint comes more with AutoCAD because we use that more often here, but it falls under the Autodesk umbrella. But having a new AutoCAD every year is not a "major release." Especially since AutoCAD 2008 has yet to fix problems that were in AutoCAD 2007. When you do that to me it does seem like they are "upgrading" way too often. 2008 should be a patch for 2007... and it would still need more patches.

3dmax = unstable pile of s...

i lost weeks of work because of corupt geometry that turned out just after reopening a file and not while working on it. and can anyone take a tool serious that doesnt have an "outliner" (object-list).

i would vote for a completely new product from autodesk in the philosophy of MODO/XSI. 3dsmax is just a bunch of patched together tools that we have to be lucky if they work.

to get me back max10 would have to be really really awsome!

Ah this is the same Bubbaloo from the ACA 08 discussion board and the giant thread about the installer not installing. I just actually printed that whole thread out as we have just gotten another 5 x64 @xi machines. I dont wanna turn this away from Max 10 though, just thought id say hey. :D And I cant wait to see some of the new stuff in version 10. I do agree with KRZ though I wish it had a bit more free form capability like Modo or Mudbox, not that I do character modeling, Im all architecture, it would just be nice to have that type of ease of use and workflow

I've downloaded patched version of installer and it's working ok with my win64 sp2 pro.
I can share them, if you want.

so you're saying you don't use max but instead modo and XSI?

i have to work with max9 sometimes at work but am not really happy about it. i worked alot with max6 till max8 and then made the switch to maya, wich i think is a more mature tool. in private time i work mostly with xsi and modo because i think both have an even better foundation (even thought both tools might not be where maya is already).

i dont intend to say that you cant work with max. its popular and it does some things right but i dont see the same speed in progress form version to version like those other tools i mentioned earlier have. my guess is that its an unlikely more difficult thing to patch a tool to modernity, compared to build a modern foundation and let it grow.
