Please post here anything else (not relating to Maxwell technical matters)

Hey Adrian, what exactly are we seeing in that displacement render? Its kinda hard to see what's displacement and what's part of the image map.

Cheers,
Dr Merman

Is that it? Looks very flat to me....

looks just like some bad bump + image map combo
we can do that too 8)
yet there is some fake lawn entity that looks much better, quite unflat..

I totally agree. That's why I've posted my displacement examples on the fryrender forum. Speculation as to it's veracity will be met openly and honestly over there, so everyone should feel free to ask questions.

ETA, I would appreciate it if no one hot-links my fryrender images here. They are not meant to cause controversy, only to answer questions.

and they do answer quite clearly that displacement is really there, not flat at all, and we can't do that here. :(
My envy, Frances. And there will be no fry on my Mac, and no Windows in my house anytime soon.
So, NL Sportsfreunde, get your act together.. quickly

I have as much information about that image as you - since someone asked for samples i posted something. And quite frankly i don't think it's "flat" at all nor achievable with conventional bump mapping :o

We don't need to cap anyone just yet. When I need displacement in MWR, I currently apply that in Lightwave, save out the transformed geometry and replace it in the scene...........would be nice to have it in Studio, but it's not time to slash wrists or drink the hemlock.

That said, that 'Santana terry footstool' is way nice...............

I agree with Ricardo and Leonardo.
Posting Fried images here appears provocative, even if not so intended.
If people are interested, they can easily register on the Fry Forum, just as I did.
Hopefully NL will realize an informed user is their best customer.

Agreed. I currentlly make all my displacements in Cinema, then make the mxs with the plug. Open in Studio and render.
But having displacement in Studio would help in many cases. Not so much with my jewelry, but with the environments.

Exactly glebe! Maya can do:

Modify > Convert > Displacement to Polygons

Bingo, displacement in Maxwell the same as Fry. Only the button is in Maya and not Studio.

What would *really* be impressive is actual micropoly displacement like in Mental Ray or Renderman. Not just 10 million triangles cut into the mesh randomly.

If you had an animated character with displacement or just an animated displacement map, I'm pretty sure the Fry displacement would give a different result on every frame, making crazy popping tessellation.

It's not that exciting if you ask me!
