This tutorial looks pretty good. It's gotten a lot easier in recent years, so i'd suggest that once you've chosen your components*, you simply open the packages and go at it. Most devices come with decent manuals and if you install each one step by step you're gonna end up with a ready system, even if the thing as a whole appears too complex.
