is there a way to exclude an object completely from receiving shadows?
Exclude from GI doesn't work...

I have a cutout tree facing the camera and hidden to GI and a copy of it facing the sun and hidden to the camera.
But the visible tree is still receiving a shadow from the invisible tree and on half gets darker.
