Hi all,
This is a other one of my crazy ideas but I would love to find a solution to a problem I have had for a long time.
On regular occasions I have to render really dark spotlit exhibition spaces, which is horrible as you might expect..
I love Maxwell and got fed up with vray so almost always put up with it despite its bad problems with low light.
My main problem is that even at sl 20 many of the areas are so deep in the shadows they are full of noise, I have tried all sorts of interior photography techniques to try and shed some more light on things but generally I need the areas dark.
I was thinking of (and am in the process of trying) filling the areas with hidden emitters simply to seek out the information in those shadows and get rid of noise, then to burn those areas in post.
Anyone tried anything like this? Or have any other suggestions?

I frequently render dark scenes a few EVs brighter than I want, and then darken in post.
This is a fully valid/common workflow for dark scenes.

You don't have to put hidden emitters only in your areas of concern; you can make the whole scene brighter and then use the aforementioned technique.
