Hi all,

Help ! I'm new to Maxwell and having trouble rendering gemstones. I have a sky dome and emitters, but my gems which are diamond and tsavorite have no color at all and appear either black or colorless and I can only see the metal underneath.

any ideas folks?? I`m officially stumped !

Cheers ,

Try turning on dispersion from Material properties and also make sure you are using the proper ND for diamonds for example. One easy way is to use the IOR files included with the install which are measured materials, so you only have to worry about surface roughness, which i guess in your case you want close to zero. There is one for diamond and for a few gemstones.

The rest is about lighting them properly.....some articles about jewelry photography would be helpful to read.

Hey PJ - some tips

* No intersecting metal and gemstones - run a Boolean difference before rendering

* No skydome - just use emitters or hdri backgrounds (or combinations). Skydome will wash out and make things look crummy

* Check your attenuation distances - if you are creating your gems you may have your attenuation set too high and the light is just not losing any strength for your scene scale/gem scale.

Hope that helps - post em when you get it knocked :)
