This is due to a limitation which most unbiased engines experience. There's no real cure, but there may be things you can do to alleviate the problem. I'm moving the thread to the main forum, since this isn't specific to the Maya plug-in.

I notice in the V2 thread that the bump map on the sphere renders fine.

Any tips to improve the issue we have would be great.

Cheers,

Steve

I've tried scaling the texture, which helps, but doesn't fix the issue.
Softening the texture also helps a little.

I am having the same error. Here it is visible without any bump map or normal map. A normal map exaggerates the effect but even a pure lambert material shows it.

The only workaround I found to this problem is
- lower bump/normal map strength
- subdivide geometry as much as possible
- change lighting

What is the strength of your bump? I've had some weird issues when using high bump values (usually when using the default global bump value of 30)...I get some of that faceting going on. Which, btw that defult value of 30 really confuses me.

the bump was set at the default.

I think the main problem in my case was the size of the texture - it was way too big.

I have emailed next limit and then sent them the files. Just waiting to hear back.
