Hi

I’m using V2 and keep getting white dots/noise in my renders. They only seem to appear on white materials such as ‘white paint’ or ‘porcelain’ etc. They persist no matter how long I run the render.

The linked image shows a chrome type sculpture. The reflections from the HDRI on the chrome are clear and crisp but the rest is covered in the white dots/noise.

I am new to rendering so if someone could explain why this is happening, and better still how to resolve it that would be great.

(ps, I’m a little stupid so the easier to understand the better!)

Thanks.

Welcome to the forums!

-white noise are caustics casted by chrome material - those caustics takes longer to render, that's why they appear as white noise. What SL did you reach in that image?

-those single white dots sometimes appear when you apply SimuLens; did you use SimuLens on that image?

Hi m-Que

Thanks loads for the reply.

- I reached an SL of 16. The image is 3072x2305dpi. I wonder if this is enough? I'm still trying to understand SL, I don't think the manual explains it that indept especialy for those new to rendering.

- No Ididn't use SimuLens.

* on your note that about caustics casted by chrome materials, I wonder why then the white noise is on the backdrop also, much further from the chrome?

Any thought you could throw my way is great but don't worry if you have better things to do lol!

Cheers.

Welcome to the forum! The white dots in the fore ground are definitely caustics from the chrome that just need time to clear up...SL16 is likely not high enough. As to the rest of the scene it is hard to tell from the small image but a few points;

your scene is at a pretty high resolution and as such will take a higher SL to clear (the higher the res the longer it takes to clear up)
are you using any SSS in your plastics?
your backdrops and other objects look like highly reflective plastics and as such will create caustics that will take time to clear (similar to the caustics from your chrome)

Just a few thoughts, let us know how you make out with a higher SL image

I will get on that and take a look (I'm waiting for new render)

But anyone else, PLEASE keep the thoughts coming if you have any.

Thanks
