I noticed some options in the material editor that I hadn't noticed before. Namely that you can create a "swatch" from your current settings and store it, then go back to those settings later. But I'm not sure that it's working.
I can save a swatch but if I then change the settings and click on the icon for that swatch nothing happens. Here's what it says in the manual.

I can save a swatch but if I then change the settings and click on the icon for that swatch nothing happens. Here's what it says in the manual.
As I say, clicking the swatch does nothing. And I'm not sure what "Browse swatch" button is being referred to either. Is this a bug or is it just me?• Previews: This drop down will list all the saved material swatches. Each swatch will
have a small preview and you can select it from the list to revert the material settings
to that swatch. Alternatively, you can use the Browse swatch button at the bottom of
the Preview section.
• Store: Store the current material settings as a swatch. The saved swatch will save
all settings from the entire material, including if a texture is activated or not, texture
tiling, etc. Please note that these swatches are saved temporarily and will not be
available when you re-open the scene.
• Remove: Remove the currently selected
