Hello Tea_Bag,

No, it won't, it's impossible. In fact, this feature doesn't create new geometry as it is virtually not possible to know when the user may want it (in the case of a house building with an external and internal walls) and when the user doesn't want to (i.e. in single shell objects).

However, and if it when possible to create that extra geometry, the user may not want a single plain color, but to apply a material to the cross section, and what are the UVs of that new geometry?

Moreover, what is the illumination of that areas? Keep in mind that the render booleans won't alter the scene lighting (the light doesn't enter through the boolean hole) to allow rendering a building showing its particular interior lighting and mood. In fact, those cut internal areas are not illuminated nor by the exterior nor by the exterior lighting, so they would appear completely black anyway.

If you are looking for just a plain color (or a cut graphic pattern) you can always select the pitch black areas on the render (corresponding to that unlit cross section) and use this as a mask for your color.

If you are looking for a more sophisticated material assignment, it is better you perform geometric boolean substraction in your modeling application, that will generate true polygons and UVs there.

that just made me think of a 2-sided material on a solid :)

would be nice if the cuts could have a separate color in the material id channel

2-sided material with emitter component on the inside. Hmm? :)

But then we would see it as the hollow geometry it is, I guess.

Then,... overexpose with colored light and play with it with color multilight.

(Just brainstorming)

that would be, let's say the conventional way, a second id color per material backface is probalby a little less resource intensive

It might work but this feels like, why keep it simple when we can make it complicated....

As Dario suggests, since these areas will be completely black, it already is like a sort of matID and would be pretty simple to wand select in PS with a very low tolerance. Even easier if you output to 16bit so you have more range.

i get your point, but if i think of cutting eg. a large building horizontally, one is likely to have rooms that are completely unlit;
there the wand would bleed out i am afraid

*edit
don't gt me wrong.. i can get cuts out of the host applications just fine in rhino.
it is no big deal.but there are applications where intersecting meshes/solids with decent vector output is not so easy.

just thinking out loud..

Is it possible to apply a custom alpha to a boolean object? that way you could select just the sectioned parts...

Like Justin Beiber in a plane crash?
no, that would be just comforting ;-)

ouch, can you quickly check how many 13 year old girls are watching this thread please? I might need to go hide...

and now a serious question:
with the projector emitter, is it possible to change the projection angle (or the projector lens focal distance, for that matter), or is that done with the image resolution/pixelsize?
tnx

About the cut faces of objects. Here is an idea:
The user may choose to apply a material to the invisible cutting object and Maxwell would show that material ONLY at the intersections.

wow, jewellers are included in V3, with a NEW lense for jewellery ? thanks.
I should try this, I must inform jewellers around..

about the water, will there be an option to visualize it in the host app?
because if meshing is done only at render time it's impossible to place a boat on the water ...?

If you have an Android phone or tablet you can view the rendered JPGs natively with "TurnMe Panorama" or "Panoramic Photo Viewer 360 PRO", they're both good in their own way.

For the desktop I use a really nice standalone viewer called "DevalVR Player" (http://www.devalvr.com/paginas/productos/index.html). It is a much smoother player than QuickTime and plays the following formats: DVL, MOV, JPG, TIF, SWF. I highly recommend it :-)

And then if I want to convert the rendered panorama to HTML Flash or QuickTime, I use "Pano2VR" (http://ggnome.com/pano2vr). You can do a lot of fancy things with it and it's simple to use.

HTH,
Andrew.
