Hello choo-chee,
In fact it is another way to use the Standard Material Editor.
The old Wizards worked only in one way: You could select a (i.e.) Carpaint, choose its color and smoothness and the editor creates the whole structure for you. BUT if you wanted the change back the original carpaint color, you may needed to adjust it on several Layers and BSDFs on an structure that maybe you don't understand completely, or remove that material and start the Wizard with a new carpaint.
Now, the new Assistant gives you quick access to several material "types" (plastic, metal, transparent...) and get a very clean and easy Material Editor just exposing the parameters related in that material. So they are live if you want to change the carpaint color, or so...
If you want, you can revert your material to the Advanced Editor with the full parameters if you want to perform detail custom adjustments, but you can move 99% of your time with this simple Editor.
Honestly, this will be a well celebrated feature : )
Cheers!
