Does anyone know when this is likely to be announced (fitting in with the Siggraph timetable)? I am keen to know the parameters of this as I am hoping to buy some new hardware and I need to know if I need to purchase a specific graphics card to make it work (or just rely on my CPU performance as usual).

Gotta wait a few more days.
We're sending in some spies from this forum. Let's hope they'll bring us some good news

Wondering the same here. I recently purchased an nvidia 470 but had contemplated returning it for the 480 because it isn't much more expensive. the 470 meets all my needs, so i couldn't justify the faster card...now i'm wondering if maybe i should!

So no GPU work then. All done with CPU (and smoke and mirrors). Cool.

I was a bit worried by the trend to needlessly tie software to particular hardware.

Brilliant! And the new macbook pro's got that Core i7 processor, which he was running in the demo. Possible a different microchip with more L3 cache, but I don't know how much a difference that makes,.

but I wonder why he stated the specs of the graphics card he was running in the first place? if it shouldn't matter?

Which demo are you talking about? I haven't seen one on a macbook pro?

Ah, thank for clearing that out. I seems the 920 he used, has got 4 cores at the same clock frequence, as the Macbook pro, but that latter one only has 2 cores.

damn,.

Hey all,

Just got a demo from Juan on the show floor. It was brief as it's very busy in the booth, but a couple of notes...

1). There are no restrictions to what you can and cannot use in the RT preview window. Displacement? Check. SSS? Check. Measured IOR? Check. Of course, piling stuff on will slow it down a bit but it's still very quick.

2). At least at this time, it is CPU based. However, after seeing it in person I can't imagine how much faster a GPU is really going to make it.

3) cannot give you a release date, but I got the impression that it's not going to be too long...

4) RT is in Studio only...for now...
