I'll dig up some of the old scenes but they are lost in depths of my backups as they are from over a year ago... last time I tested Multilight was before FIRE was introduced, because FIRE largely made Multilight pretty pointless for me.

I try to remember to tell new users to think about lighting the same way a commercial photographer would -- which in my mind would cover fill-lights and the like...

Yeah, this thread has needed to be moved for a long time.

Best,
Jason.

This could prove to be a really interesting discussion. I hope to see some examples or provide some myself. I've long been slightly afraid of ML. I mostly use it while gritting my teeth as I've feared/assumed in increased render times enough to be significant. And color ML? Forget it, I'm petrified of the hit it would give me providing only minimal reward. But if it's all the same difference I'd just use color ML all the time. I assume (maybe that's another bad assumption) that there is in fact a RAM hit with each of these even if there isn't a render time increase? I've got RAM to spare though so I can't wait to see how this episode of Myth Busters plays out.

Well from what I've seen the hit is you have a much larger MXI file -- which takes longer to save (obviously) so saving less often (or not at all) negates the issue of time wasted saving to disk.

I haven't checked the RAM issue but at this point I have plenty of RAM too so I'm not concerned there -- you should definitely test it out for yourself and see what you think.

I haven't had much time to look up those old files -- but it really doesn't matter, this is the reality of using ML and I'm pretty happy about it.

Best,
Jason.

Hi there

I now have run the Ranch benchmark scene to get an impression how projects can be done regarding render time/cost. What confused me is that the maxwell network monitor shows an SL of 12.7578 when the 5 minutes are over but the mxi opened in maxwell.exe shows an SL of 15.21. So what number would I use to calculate the ranch delta (and which of the two is correct SL anyway)?

Cheers,
Rogurt
