Friendly Alien - WIP by LarsMagnusson, on Flickr

Decided to try SSS for my armor (it's already in the skin).
Previously I used the armor to block some of the SSS to speed things up, but now I might attempt making an SSS armor similar to General Grievous in StarWars3 (the cool robot with four arms)
Currently it's the Macaroni-SSS preset, just modified it's color and upped the attenuation to 20mm.

Before crop and re-size, it was a 1900x1267 render, SL15.41, 14hours.
(reaching SL20 would probably take some more hours with this rather heavy geometry, but it was a fun test...now I have to keep working on it  )

Lars, it's really coming good. It could be less pinky but the armor rocks...

Thanks Brett and happy holidays to you, too! :)

Thanks, and yes, the pink balance is a struggle.
Tricky to mix the SSS with Texture map, but now when SSS clears more quickly I should reach a solution faster
( I think the render I'm currently running looks good even at SL 9.6 after 2h! )
Im currently experimenting with Colored transmittance map, to have more SSS in the appropriate areas, like mouth and nose.
( the above render didn't use that )

He,he, I think you'll change your mind now... looks less friendly with single light when the smile in the corner of the mouth isn't visible

Single white emitter, SL 13.62 @ 12.5h.

I sort of...slowly...realized that trying to adjust and tweak the skin in a non-neutral HDRI lighted scene....might not be smart
With the previous HDRI this skin actually becomes pink at around SL 14.
But with this single white emitter this is the result I get, and the SSS (and detail) in the skin is actually the same if I compare a 2h and a 12h render.

Should have thought of this earlier (already common knowledge for the rest of you  ):
Tweak material in controlled environment or in simball scene, and then if render with HDRI, treat it as a photo that needs whitebalance adjustment. Sigh, I'm still a rookie!
