I think nobody wants to move to GPU renderers... and leave Maxwell... It will be something like Maxwell and mental ray for Max users... If you want animation, use mental ray....
If you want to render a simple project fast, use GPU... that's it...
But I have to disagree on what you say about the "visualization artists"... I, for example will never need a top quality image to persuade my client that his house will be pretty... I chose Maxwell mostly for the simplicity combined with the quality... You have to agree that Vray and Mental Ray have great images to show but all of them are based on hundreds of settings... Maxwell is simple and powerful and that's why is the top renderer for me....On the other hand, the ability to show a really nice image in less than 1 hour using GPU is very tempting, even if the caustics of the pool are not as great as Maxwell's... or the reflection of the reflection of the reflection... doesn't exist...
Making something mediocre is sometimes making what you need and nothing more...

***Check my signature... I've never made a piece of art... Just what I needed to do... I had also "Kerkythea" added to my toolbox until recently... Now with my 2X i7/2.4Ghz +1Q6600 I can do what I want with Maxwell...

I really doupt any GPU renderer can do high-quality jewelry renders atthe moment.
The materials are just superiour in Maxwell.

So like I said before whyn ot mixing two renderers? Get previews to the client fast with GPU. Render him the beauties in a day or two.
If yu have really such a lot high-qualy renders to do its up to your marketing to tell him why he wants to wait some days for high-quality finals.
Or charge a bit more and get the job done by a renderfarm or cloud computing.

At least it keeps very interesting and I wonder how far the GPU renderers are in one year.

and there is a question. Why NLimit is so hardass in leting speed/quality ratio go free?

Is it impossible with this engine to unlock some bounce control? or "sample background image on/off"
or is it only " no because no! go do your homework! I know better! I am smart and wise and always organize my tshirts with perfect square inside the drawers"

many times I did my projects in vray materials to show fast preview and on air changes with clients.
and in home reassigned all scene to look in maxwell how it should realy looks like.
It is just funny isn't it ?

Just please give me two reasons why not? except - it is our motto or other marketing ...p
Even GOD almight gave us free will so Next Limit can trust us too. We won't broke it.

______________
QUALITY IS PERFECT NOW !! just do something with speed.
Don't code "refraction from reflection of dispersion of SSS absorption" in few moments.
There is possibility to go faster then why not to try ?

anyway I don't buy NL does not working on this. at least one man is looking in GPU computing very carefully, and this forum talks are just decoy for enemies ;)

the most important thing is to work the shadows and caustics.

But I think that NL can sacrifice the "physically correct".
this is the point perhaps, but for a preview I do not think is important.

I agree in a preview version of the GPU, really useful ... provided that we can keep the materials and settings.

I do not think in the next 4 / 5 years, the GPU can render us as now ... but meanwhile it would be useful if the setup is fast even if incorrect but similar to rendering.

Thanks in GPU Preview
(Then maybe it will eventually see if it can also speed up the rendering preserving the quality ... if possible)

Well I know what one I would render with. Modo.

Despite the shadows not being as accurate, and the slight noise in the DOF (I would probably do it in post anyway, especially for this image with no transparency) The modo render looks 98% as good as the others in about 1/20th of the time. That's a no brainer. :)

Its very interesting. The guy didnt save a lot of time rendering with Octane compared to Maxwell. I tried the scene too with my GTX480 and octane and its not indeed cleaning up very fast.
So his conclusion about the 98% is right. But I really love the workflow in Maxwell better. One good thing about Maxwell is the setup. Model, texture, click render. Done.

But beside that there needs MLT to be introduced to Octane to have compareable results. Its keeping interesting. :)

IMO, I feel like doing this would be change the intent of Maxwell and pretty much make it like any other renderer out there. I agree, that it would be quite helpfull to be able to use a somewhat biased solution through maxwell to do preview and prelim renderings but that just isn't the intention of Maxwell. Doing what you are asking for would be like owning a Ferrari and wishing it had a gas saving feature, or owning a Prius and wishing it had a "speed/power" feature.

I get what you are saying...I have many times wished that i would have an option to not have infinite light bounces or whatever. I always come back to the same conclusion though...I use Maxwell because of the fact that it doesn't take any shortcuts.

Having said that...a gpu render option for material preview would be nice :) a bit more complicated material preview scene at a size larger than a postage stamp :) :) :)
