In studio (2.6) if you create a shortcut for apply to selection, if that selection is a group that has a different material already applied then it will apply the new material to the group and not the components, unless you right click an select apply to selection there (that shows new shortcut beside it) then it will apply to the full group.

What is the shortcut? Because if you hold down Shift while dragging a material to a group, it will only apply the material to objects in the group that don't have a material applied to it. This is useful sometimes to not override any materials the objects already had.
