re. speed.. Thats what I noticed from the benchmark, I think its true, might be wrong, I'm too lazy to test what I proffer 
re. look.. the clipmap one holds its form and becomes more visible at grazing angles.
Ok i'm running the test.. hang on.

Ok so its not really the grazing angle which is different, but the overall brightness for a given level of transparency.
re. speed.. bench for just clip was sl9.2 1560 after 1min. just weight was sl8.7 1260 and a tiny bit noisier.
