Hi All
What is the best way to move all my Maxwell project data to a new disk (purchasing a NAS solution) without losing all my file associations? For logistics reasons I need to map the new NAS drive to a different drive letter than the current disk.

Basically you'll find a couple downloads at the end of that page for your OS. What it sets up is a sort of super shortcut. So you transfer all of your stuff from, say, your Materials Database folder on your C: drive to a new folder on your NAS (let's call it your Z: drive) like z:/Materials Database.

Then you'd right click your z:/Materials Database folder select Pick Link Object and then go back to C:\Program Files\Next Limit\Maxwell 2 (because in our example that's where your Materials Database folder was), right click again and chose Drop As -> Junction.

That creates a new folder on your C: drive named Materials Database but when you open it, it redirects to the folder on your Z: drive. Essentially it works exactly like a normal shortcut but most programs don't understand shortcuts so this fools it.

I've never used it for what you're talking about, but I think it would work. What I use this for is to link up folders onto my Dropbox ( http://db.tt/jmv7wSe ) to sync between my computers (I have my SketchUp and Photoshop plugins synced as well as my Maxwell preview scenes and used to sync up Firefox before switching to Chrome).

Thanks for the reply. That seems like it would definitely work. When I get the NAS I shall try this out.

It would be great if I could just batch change all the textures....they have the same string just a new drive letter. Is there a way I can just edit the Drive letter and apply to all textures?

Where were your textures before? On your C: drive or on an external drive? If its the later you can definitely do that.

Additionally, my setup may be of value to you. I've got a 1tb NAS on my desktop (also mapped to Z:). I've got a couple 1tb hard drives for backups which I alternate between (both mapped to U: which works fine since they're identical and only one is plugged in at a time - the one that isn't plugged in is in a firesafe). Then I've got a portable hard drive (don't recall the drive letter) where I backup a number of work folders like my maxwell materials, 2d images, etc. Then at home I've got that portable drive mapped to Z:. It works wonderfully because I can open up a Maxwell file with all my textures mapped to Z: at work but at home since it's mapped to the same letter the paths are all the same and there are no issues, no need for pack n go's etc.

I use Puresync for my backups. It has a lot of automatic backup options and 1 or 2 way syncing that works really well.
